The CDC has released that there has been an increase of influenza viruses detected now that the holiday season is in full swing. The majority of these cases have been found in young adults and children, who commonly drive the community spread of the flu. Young adults coming home for the holidays from college or university may be putting the rest of your family at risk!

This is not particularly unusual for this time of year, as flu activity always starts to increase in October, peaks in February, but can last all the way into May. Last year’s flu season, 2020-2021, had historically low flu activity due to the strict COVID-19 prevention measures, such as mandatory masks and quarantine. However this year, as we begin to resume our normal routines, flu circulation is beginning to resume. This year the predominant strain, Influenza A (H3N2) indicates that this season will be a more severe one.

The best thing you can do for your family is to get vaccinated. In close living quarters, such as college campuses, classrooms, and shared restrooms, flu viruses are known to spread rapidly. Everyone 6 months and older is deemed safe by the CDC to get an annual flu vaccine. The flu vaccine protects against four flu viruses, including H3N2 - the one to be most concerned about this year. Antiviral drugs should be the second line of defense that can be used to treat the flu if you do get sick.
