Grilling is Not Always Chill

The USFA (United States Fire Administration) collects data on fires caused by home grills or barbeques. 

• Grill fires result in about $37 million worth of property damage every year
• Approximately 70% of homes in the U.S. have some kind of outdoor grill
• Late spring and summer months are the prime times for grilling, so 97% of the outdoor-cooking fires occur from May through August.

Safety Tips and Things to Keep in Mind

• Gas grills are responsible for 79% of all home grill fires, with mechanical failure being the leading factor in the fire
• To avoid such failure (see above), do not use grills that have breaks or weak spots in the pipes
• For gas grills, make the sure the lid is opened when you turn it on
• Check containers to ensure they don’t have leaks or breaks
• Keep grills away from siding, deck railings, and furniture
• Do not use grills in enclosed spaces
• Clean grills often so there is no grease or fat build-up
• Never leave grills unattended
• Use long-handled tools
• Don’t wear loose clothing near a grill
• Keep children and animals at least three feet away from a grill
• If the day is windy, postpone the cookout (flying embers can end up anywhere)
• For charcoal grills, use only lighter fluid or charcoal starter, not gasoline or other flammable liquids
• Do not pour lighter fluid on a grill fire that is already burning
• Empty coals after they have cooled

More Statistics from the USFA:

• Most injuries involving grills are contact burns, caused when a person touches the grill or heat-conducting objects next to the grill
• About 39% of the contact burns happen to children under five
• Grills are responsible for an average of 10,200 home fires each year
• 4,500 are structure fires: the fire spreads to the house
• 5,500 are outdoor fires: the fire stays outside of the house, but may damage yard furniture, the patio or deck, or other outdoor buildings
