Aromas in Fiction (with some detours into reality)

In the 2010 movie, Tangled, one of the characters noticed that he was in a pub that “smells like the color brown”. Having one sense activate another is called synesthesia.

Author Devon Monk in Magic to the Bone, wrote for a character telling the audience, “I took a couple of deep breaths, smelled rain, diesel and the pungent dead-fish-and-salt stench off the river.”

Don DeLillo, in The Desert, wrote: “There's always a period of curious fear between the first sweet-smelling breeze and the time when the rain comes cracking down.”

In Supernatural, the Winchester brothers check whether anyone smelled sulfur during the odd event of the week. Sulfur, “brimstone” in the bible, is a hint that demons are present.

Chester Heights residents who smell sulfur at home or work shouldn’t suspect demonic activity, but should treat the smell as an emergency. The rotten-egg stench signals that something is wrong, which could be any of the following:

• Gas leak: natural gas has no odor, but because the gas can suffocate people, companies add a sulfur-smelling compound to it. If you smell sulfur, and have any reason to believe it is a gas leak, turn off the furnace (or whatever the leak is from) and call the gas company. If the leak is from the furnace, leave the building.
• Central air system: sulfur smells from the a/c are probably a result of contaminated ducts or air filters. Cleaning the ducts or replacing the filters should take care of the problem. If it's in the drain, call a plumber, and then call us to get rid of the smell. 
• If the smell comes from other drains, there's another plumbing problem. Even the toilet shouldn't smell bad.
