History: Fun Facts for Glen Mills

Not having to worry about coping with fire damage means there is time to learn some history about fighting fires in the United States. No surprise – Philadelphia has a starring role.

William Penn saw the devastation of the London Fire in 1666. When he founded Philadelphia in 1682, he made plans so the city would be less likely to suffer a similar fate. Measures included:

  • Buildings made of brick instead of wood
  • Laws that required regular chimney cleaning

The city bought its first fire engine in 1718 – that was great!

No one maintained it – that was not great.

In 1730, the city needed its fire engine, but the equipment didn’t work (see above).

Benjamin Franklin was not pleased. He wrote about the need for more equipment and better maintenance.

In 1736, Franklin created the first volunteer fire-fighting company.
