What You Can Do with Leaves Instead of Burning Them!

11/1/2021 (Permalink)

There are so many wonderful and safe options!

Despite it being illegal in most states, many people burn their leaves. But it is a serious fire and health hazard that you should definitely avoid! Here’s a list of fun things you can do with your leaves instead:

  • Jump in them! The classic fall activity for children, adults, and pets alike.
  • Compost! Leaves are a great addition to your compost pile.
  • Press them and create beautiful artwork! Choose leaves that aren’t yet spotty and bumpy and sandwich them between newspaper or waxed paper. Then, lay your heaviest books on top for about two weeks, or until the leaves are fully dry.
  • Take photos with family! Before you rake away the leaves, use them as a wonderful background for some fall pictures.
  • Make a wreath! A seasonal wreath is always very inviting and festive. You can use leaves, dried twigs, and even add gourds, pine cones, or acorns!
  • Use them as mulch! Leaves make a great protective cover and insulation for perennials and root crops that stay in the ground over the winter. You can also shred them with a mulching lawnmower or toss them into a shredder so that the finely cut leaves decompose faster and become a part of the soil.
  • Make a scarecrow! It’s an excellent tool to scare birds away from your garden or as a fall decoration. Simply use the leaves to stuff old clothes.

All of these options are much safer than burning leaves! And don’t pose any fire risk. Get creative and have fun this fall!
