Space Heaters are the Second-Leading Cause of Home Fires

Spring temperatures are cool at night, and many people use space heaters to reduce heating costs and to heat rooms with inadequate heat distribution. Although space heaters are commonly used for this purpose, a report from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) identifies space heaters as being responsible for 53 percent of U.S. home fires, and the leading cause of home fire deaths. SERVPRO^® of Southern Delaware County & West Chester offers residents these suggestions from the NFPA on how to use electric space heaters safely:

• Keep children and pets away from space heaters at all times
• Never leaved a space heater unattended
• Turn your space heater off before going to bed
• Place space heaters at a minimum of three feet away from combustible materials
• Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are operating
• Make sure the electrical cords are not damaged and avoid the use of extension cords
