Business owners face significant costs in damage, and property owners have significant losses and high repair costs. As soon as the flames are put out, your insurance company should be the first contact as they will need to come out, inspect the damage, and file a claim. They will then supply you with the money you need to start the fire damage restoration and content cleaning process. It is important that you use a company that is properly certified, so call us at SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County!

We will be available to come out to the site of the loss, and you will be in the right hands as far as getting the right services, protecting what you have left after the fire. Rental Property and Mold in Brookhaven

10/9/2019 (Permalink)

Technician in a Tyvek suit cleaning up mold. If treated properly, mold does not have to destroy your Brookhaven home, office, or commercial property.

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County understands mold and we want to educate our community about the best ways to prevent and treat your Brookhaven property to avoid costly repairs.

Mold:

  • grows from mold spores
    • spores are too small to see unaided
    • spores can survive harsh environments for many years
  • can grow almost anywhere
  • needs to have only
    • above-freezing temperatures
    • protein, such as in animal dander, skin cells, wood, plaster, carpet
    • moisture (high humidity is enough)
  • grows rapidly
  • damages property
  • has a bad smell
  • is unsightly

If you have a small amount of mold on a dish, you can clean it. You can even throw it away. However, if you have a large amount of mold, you need licensed mold remediation from an industry professional. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines a “large amount” as 10 square feet or more.

If you suspect your apartment or office building might have mold, you need to have a certified mold inspector out to examine the area. SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County cannot identify what kind of mold you have, but we are licensed in mold remediation and we can repair the damage caused by mold.

When you have a concern about mold damage in your apartment or condominium, speak with your landlord or property manager if you think he/she should hire licensed professionals. Whatever the disaster, remember that SERVPRO is Here to Help.

Thunderstorm preparedness in Chadds Ford

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

Lighting striking through the sky Although we cannot prevent thunderstorms, we can prepare for them.

Thunderstorms are beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. Commercial properties and office buildings can experience severe damage in Chadds Ford area. Thunderstorms include lightning and can:

  • Include winds over 50 MPH
  • Create hail
  • Cause flash floods
  • Cause tornadoes

In most places, a thunderstorm can happen at any time of the year and at any time of the day.

SERVPRO® of Southern Delaware County knows you cannot prevent a thunderstorm, but you can prepare:

  • Know the risk for thunderstorms in Chadds Ford
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system
  • Cut down or trim trees that may fall on your home or office
  • Install surge protectors, lightning rods, or a lightning protection system

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County repeats the warning, “When thunder roars, go indoors”.  You don’t have to wait for the thunder. If there is a thunderstorm warning, go inside. Once there:

  • Unplug appliances
  • Do not use landline phones in office or home
  • Pay attention to alerts and warnings

If your office is near a large body of water:

  • Do not swim or get in a boat, get to land immediately. Find shelter
  • If you are in a car, don’t touch anything metal
  • “Turn around. Don’t Drown. '' Avoid flooded roads. 6 inches of moving water can knock you down. One foot of moving water can sweep away your car.

A lightning strike during a thunderstorm can leave a wake of destruction in its path. This can range from minor electrical issues to fire damage. Lightning is also a major cause of injury or death from weather-related dangers.  Most people survive being hit by lightning, but they often have long-term problems.

OSHA Guidelines for Fire Extinguisher Usage in Aston

9/27/2019 (Permalink)

“OSHA” Occupational Safety and Health Administration written and clipped onto a clipboard. Be properly trained on when and how to use a fire extinguisher in Aston.

SERVPRO® of Southern Delaware County knows that owning a fire extinguisher is not enough. Knowing the proper use of fire extinguishers can prevent fire from destroying lives in Aston.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requires that employers train their employees how and when to use fire extinguishers. OSHA does not allow untrained employees to use a fire extinguisher.  They should provide training shortly after the employee is hired, and then every year thereafter. OSHA also requires monthly inspections for fire extinguishers.

Fire extinguishers have to be placed where they cannot be moved or damaged. The carrying handle should be 3.5' to 5' above the floor.

Employees must know when to use fire extinguishers.

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County suggests asking yourself these questions regarding fire extinguishers in your Aston business:

  • Have I pulled the fire alarm?
  • Can everyone get out?
  • Is the fire extinguisher easy to reach?
  • Do I know how to use it?
  • Is the fire contained in a small area?
  • Is the smoke non-toxic?
  • Do I have an escape route?

If you can answer “yes” to all of the questions, it is reasonable to use the fire extinguisher.

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County reminds you that fire is fast. If you cannot contain it within 30 seconds, get everyone out of the area. Call 911 once you are outside.

Commercial Flood Insurance in Chester

9/27/2019 (Permalink)

Picture of a stick person stranded on the top of a building during a flood. Tips to obtaining flood insurance for your Chester business.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides flood insurance. The NFIP doesn’t sell insurance. Buy flood insurance from an insurance agent.

SERVPRO® of Southern Delaware County is interested in helping the businesses in our community become more educated on flood insurance. According to FEMA, 40% of small businesses do not reopen after experiencing a devastating flood.

Check to see if you might be required to have flood insurance. Things to know in Chester:

  • Standard commercial insurance doesn’t pay for flood damage
  • The NFIP sets the rates
  • Rates depend on:
    • whether you live in a flood plain
    • flood risk in your area
    • building’s age
    • building’s construction
  • Building property insurance covers the building
  • Personal property insurance covers the building’s contents
  • NFIP suggests you need both types
  • Policies go into effect 30 days after purchase

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County recommends the following:

  • Check whether or not your area participates in the NFIP
  • Check whether or not your area is part of the Community Rating The NFIP might have a discount
  • Talk to your insurance agent when you need to make changes

Make sure your business is protected from the devastation that comes with unwanted flooding in your office.

Commercial Water Damage in Aston Building

8/9/2019 (Permalink)

There are numerous situations where a commercial property might suffer extensive water damage. For example, a flood from a storm or overflowing river bank might deposit massive amounts of dirty water all over the first floor of a structure. Or, a burst/leaky pipe might cause water to collect in the spaces between the walls or floors in the structure, leading to mold growth and other issues in these hidden areas.

Whether it’s flood water damage or some other form of moisture intrusion, what should you do when the commercial property you’re inspecting has water damage?

One of the first things you’ll want to do when you discover signs of water damage is verify the extent of the damage. However, a simple visual check probably won’t be enough to reliably establish the full scope of the problem.

Water can soak into many building materials far from the source of the moisture intrusion without creating obvious signs of damage for a long time.

Let the professionals at SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County take care of your commercial water damage.  We are available 24/7/365 and have the specialized equipment and experience that is needed to get your business back up and running as quickly as possbile.

This saves time so we can begin the work of mitigating the damage which can save you time and money. Provides facility details such as shut-off valve locations, priority areas and priority contact information. Having a quick reference of what to do, how to do it and who to call provides solutions in advance of an emergency.

The Different Causes of Commercial Water Damage

9/17/2018 (Permalink)

When business owners visualize water damage, they often picture a massive storm wiping out power lines, flooding offices, and shutting down businesses for days at a time. It is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms.

However, many entrepreneurs and business space renters forget that storms and severe weather aren't the only causes of floods and water damage. Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

1. Malfunctioning sprinkler systems
Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.

2. Damaged appliances and equipment
This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

3. Broken pipes and plumbing
Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails, water damage could be the result.

4. Backed up sewer lines
This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

Storm damage

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

A major office complex called SERVPRO during a very bad wind storm.  Their first floor was flooding from ground water and to make matters worse they lost their power.  The maintenance manager called us immediately.  Our crew got the necessary equipment together and was on their way.  We were also advised that some of the equipment in the production shop was soaked.  When they arrived there was still standing water but the water had begun to recede.  The company got their emergency generator started and all was good to proceed with the work.  It seemed that aside from the outside water source a pipe had broken in the basement causing most of the damage.  After the water valve was turned off the manager called a plumber to fix the pipe.  Our crew did the cleanup in a timely manner with all the required equipment.  The owner was so very happy that he only had to close shop for one day since SERVPRO did such an amazing job.  Each day a company is closed money is lost.  This owner was so very happy for himself and also for his employees that didn't lose any work time.

Water Damage

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

One of my valued COI's called regarding water damage in one of the first floor offices.  It seems that the water heater stationed in the rear of the building leaked so bad that it had to be replaced by their plumber.  In the meantime water had soaked all their carpeting and some of the desks on that floor.  It was about 1000 sq.ft of water soaked carpeting.  Our crew got out in a timely manner and began extraction.  The air movers and dehumidifiers were all brought it to do their job.  Some of the carpeting had to be removed and replaced but the majority of the carpeting was saved.  My customer was so very happy with the efficient way SERVPRO handled this job.  He advised he will recommend us to all his friends that are business owners.

The Importance of the Emergency Ready Program
