Preparing your Office for Winter!

11/4/2021 (Permalink)

A person spreading salt on a slippery sidewalk. Be ready for winter!

Winter weather can be unpredictable and harsh on your office building. But we can help with some tips to prepare you!

  • Always communicate with your employees. Know their contact information so you can reach out to them if weather affects working hours.
  • Always communicate with customers, as well. If there is a winter storm or blizzard on the forecast and you know you will be closing or shortening your hours, be sure to put that information out to customers through social media, emails, a sign, and/or an answering machine recording.
  • Salt your sidewalks! If you plan to remain open, make sure to do this to prevent ice from forming and causing slippery conditions.
  • Keep an eye on any surrounding power lines. If you see a power line that is down near your business, call 911 immediately and STAY AWAY! It could still be live with electricity.
  • Consider buying a generator for any important devices that may need electricity to prevent major loss.
  • Check all of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace the batteries regularly.
  • Have a mailing back up plan. Think of anything your business may rely on the mail service to provide or send. Plan accordingly by using email or online programs for important documents and payroll.

Here at SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County & West Chester, we not only perform restoration, cleaning, and construction services for homes – but also for commercial properties! If severe weather causes any damage to your property, we are here to help get your business up and running again. Give Danielle a call! 610-506-8919

Stop Mold from Attacking your Business

10/28/2021 (Permalink)

Mold can be seen growing on a wall as a stressed business owner looks at it, hands on his head. Mold growing in your commercial property can be stressful! Call Danielle at SERVPRO 610-506-8919 so we can help!

This past year West Chester and Southern Delaware County fell victim to multiple hurricanes, and some areas had severe flooding. Unfortunately, this can lead to the growth of mold, which can cause a major business interruption and serious health effects for anyone exposed at your commercial property. Mold can grow quickly in wet conditions, but SERVPRO is here to cut it off at its source.

In order to prevent mold in your business:

  • You should clean up leaks right away.
  • Make sure to install proper ventilation – especially in rooms with a lot of moisture in the air, such as bathroom, kitchens, and laundry facilities.
  • If a room is temporarily damp, you can use freestanding fans to blow humidity away from the area.
  • Monitor your humidity level – it’s easy to get inexpensive monitors.
  • Remove affected items such as furniture and rugs as quickly as possible to avoid the spread of mold spores.

Do not attempt to use bleach or store-bought products yourself, as these products still create additional water and moisture, which will only cause the mold to continue growing. It is best to leave this to the professionals – and we are ready to help!

If there is already mold in your business, call SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County & West Chester! Danielle can be reached at 610-506-8919

Mold in Your Commercial Property

10/28/2020 (Permalink)

Mold cleanup advertisement for SERVPRO Call Danielle 610-506-8919

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County understands mold and we want to educate our community about the best ways to prevent and treat your commercial property.

Mold grows from mold spores which are too small to see unaided. Spores can survive harsh environments for many years. It can also grow almost anywhere. Mold needs to have above-freezing temperatures, protein such as animal dander, skin cells, wood, plaster, carpet, and moisture or high humidity.

Mold grows rapidly, damages property, has a bad smell, is unsightly and can cause health effects.

If you have a small amount of mold on a dish, you can clean it. You can even throw it away. However, if you have a large amount of mold, you need licensed mold remediation from an industry professional. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines a “large amount” as 10 square feet or more.

If you suspect your apartment or office building might have mold, you need to have a certified mold inspector out to examine the area. SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County cannot identify what kind of mold you have, but we are licensed in mold remediation and we can repair the damage caused by mold.

When you have a concern about mold damage in your apartment or condominium, speak with your landlord or property manager if you think he/she should hire licensed professionals. Whatever the disaster, remember that SERVPRO is Here to Help.

If you suspect mold in your property, call Danielle at 610-506-8919.

Commercial Cleaning

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

Businesses are starting to go back to work, so having a clean business environment during COVID is extremely important.

Americans spend most of their waking hours at work. While many businesses use a cleaning service, the actual cleaning performed is often minimal, with a quick vacuum and emptying of trash. Deeper dirt, dust, allergens, and pathogens remain in carpets, on blinds, and deep within the upholstery of office furniture. There are so many benefits to having a commercial deep cleaning done at your business, especially to protect your employees from COVID and other viruses.

Employees thrive and work better in a clean, and fresh environment. Think about it, no one would want to work in a dirty environment, especially people who have allergies, and other health conditions. Having a peace of mind about this pandemic during work is extremely beneficial to both employees and customers.

By doing a deep commercial cleaning, you also prevent the spread of viruses and diseases. This means less sick days, and healthier employees which is key. Prevent COVID and protect your employees!

It also is a more professional appearance when customers or clients walk into your business. If you have a clean environment, customers notice that as well. This will give customers peace of mind while attending your business during this pandemic. It also leads to long term cost savings. Having a deep commercial cleaning helps keep the cabinets, desks, and carpets in better condition, and having them last longer.

Consider having SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County do a deep commercial cleaning at your business. It just makes sense for your business to thrive in multiple ways. Protect your employees and customers today!

Causes of Commercial Water Damage

10/26/2020 (Permalink)

There are many causes of commercial water damage and SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County is here to help you identify and prepare for them.

Causes of Commercial Water Damage:

- Appliances and equipment. If your facility has equipment that utilizes water, leakage is an ever-present danger. Air conditioners, water heaters, or anything that uses tubes, pipes, gaskets, or filters to operate has the potential to leak. If that leak happens during off hours, you could be looking at major damage. The best thing to do is to regularly look over and maintain your equipment.

- Roofing. Make sure you’re checking your roof regularly. If you get a decent amount of water it means that your drainage isn’t working effectively. Keep in mind that every inch of water weighs in at around five pounds. Over time, this can cause incredible strain and lead to leaks.

- Pipes and drains. It is important to regularly check your pipes and drains, and make sure there aren’t any clogs or leaks. Also, during cold weather especially, you should be checking to make sure the pipes don’t freeze.

- Sprinkler systems. Many commercial buildings are equipped with sprinkler systems, which are great for minimizing fire damage, but not so great for water damage when they malfunction. The fifth cause is Mother Nature causes. Natural disasters like hurricanes, severe thunderstorms and flash flooding can do untold damage to your business. You certainly can’t control the weather, but you can control how ready you are for it.

As Pennsylvania is beginning to reopen and lift some of the restrictions set in place for the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses are assessing how and when they’re going to reopen. Many are tasked with not only navigating the guidelines set forth by their state but are also working to establish an entirely new way of doing business. Regardless of industry, every business in America has had to make difficult but necessary decisions to develop a strategic plan of action for reopening.

For some, it’s allowing employees to continue to work from home for the remainder of the year. For others, it’s implementing a phased approach of reintroducing both employees and customers to their business environment. For all, a plan that involves a high standard of cleanliness and sanitation is of the utmost importance. Transparency and clear communication of reopening plans, both internally and externally, is proving to be critical for success and support during these trying times.

It’s clear that most businesses are listening to the CDC guidelines and recommendations and placing a higher emphasis on cleanliness and sanitation—for not only their employees to feel safe, but for the safety of their customers as well. Preparing an Office Emergency Kit

9/24/2020 (Permalink)

If you own a business, the safety of your staff is likely one of your top concerns throughout the average workday, but have you considered how to preserve that safety in the event of an emergency? While many situations will call for a quick evacuation, your workplace may have to go in a lockdown scenario to deal with certain disasters, so having an office emergency kit is something that officials certainly advise.

Understanding the purpose behind an emergency kit and what to pack will help you make the best decisions regarding specifically what your office may need. While there are some basics that are wise to always include, there are also plenty of extras that might prepare everyone for wider swath of scenarios that are possible.

What Is An Office Emergency Kit For?

To put it simply, an office emergency kit is for a situation where you and your staff might be stranded in the office after an emergency or disaster. While evacuation is often recommended in these unprecedented situations, there may be certain instances where you will need to stay put until help arrives instead. The emergency kit allows for everyone to have access to necessities, medical supplies, food and water to stay safe and comfortable until help arrives.

What Should the Office Emergency Kit Include?

Emergency kits are something you can keep basic or build out for every possible scenario, and how you approach this is entirely up to you. For a simple emergency kit, include these necessities:

  • Non-perishable food, such as granola or protein bars
  • Enough water to cover one gallon, per person, per day
  • First-aid kits, aspirin and any other medical goods
  • Flashlights and excess batteries
  • An NOAA Weather Radio

In addition to the very basic items, you may also want to include extras to account for even more situations and keep everyone comfortable for as long as possible. This would include items such as multi-tools/Swiss Army knives, surgical masks, duct tape, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, gloves (both latex and work types), emergency blankets, hand warmers and whistles.

If your office is damaged due to a disaster or emergency, we are here to help. Call SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County in any fire, water, or mold emergency. 610-506-8919

Different Levels of Commercial Damage

8/20/2020 (Permalink)

Commercial Commercial Building

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County handles both residential and commercial damage/restoration.

There are three levels of commercial damage that are considered:

Level 1

Level 1 is a small commercial loss typically involving 15,000 square feet or less of affected floor space. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a small commercial loss may include, but are not limited to, a stand-alone retail establishment, a small church, a daycare facility, a small shopping center, a small warehouse or manufacturing facility, or a stand-alone administrative building. A Level 1 loss can also be a small portion of a much larger structure.

Level 2

Level 2 is a midsize commercial loss typically involving 15,000 to 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved are usually multi-level or greatly divided spaces. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 2 loss may include, but are not limited to, a small multi-family property, a midsize church or school, a small shopping center, a multi-tenant administration facility, or a midsize warehouse or manufacturing facility. A Level 2 loss can also be just a portion of a much larger structure.

Level 3

Level 3 is a large commercial loss typically involving more than 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved will likely be large multi-level structures. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 3 loss can include, but are not limited to, a large church, hospital, school, or university; a large multi-family property; a mid- to high-rise retail or administration facility; a large industrial, manufacturing, or warehouse facility; or a large strip-style shopping center or shopping mall. This is the level at which it would be appropriate to refer to the project as a “large loss.”

If your commercial business has suffered any damages, call SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County at 610-506-8919.

Rental Property and Mold in Brookhaven

10/9/2019 (Permalink)

Technician in a Tyvek suit cleaning up mold. If treated properly, mold does not have to destroy your Brookhaven home, office, or commercial property.

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County understands mold and we want to educate our community about the best ways to prevent and treat your Brookhaven property to avoid costly repairs.

Mold:

  • grows from mold spores
    • spores are too small to see unaided
    • spores can survive harsh environments for many years
  • can grow almost anywhere
  • needs to have only
    • above-freezing temperatures
    • protein, such as in animal dander, skin cells, wood, plaster, carpet
    • moisture (high humidity is enough)
  • grows rapidly
  • damages property
  • has a bad smell
  • is unsightly

Thunderstorm preparedness in Chadds Ford

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

Lighting striking through the sky Although we cannot prevent thunderstorms, we can prepare for them.

Thunderstorms are beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. Commercial properties and office buildings can experience severe damage in Chadds Ford area. Thunderstorms include lightning and can:

  • Include winds over 50 MPH
  • Create hail
  • Cause flash floods
  • Cause tornadoes

In most places, a thunderstorm can happen at any time of the year and at any time of the day.

SERVPRO® of Southern Delaware County knows you cannot prevent a thunderstorm, but you can prepare:

  • Know the risk for thunderstorms in Chadds Ford
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system
  • Cut down or trim trees that may fall on your home or office
  • Install surge protectors, lightning rods, or a lightning protection system

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County repeats the warning, “When thunder roars, go indoors”.  You don’t have to wait for the thunder. If there is a thunderstorm warning, go inside. Once there:

  • Unplug appliances
  • Do not use landline phones in office or home
  • Pay attention to alerts and warnings

If your office is near a large body of water:

  • Do not swim or get in a boat, get to land immediately. Find shelter
  • If you are in a car, don’t touch anything metal
  • “Turn around. Don’t Drown. '' Avoid flooded roads. 6 inches of moving water can knock you down. One foot of moving water can sweep away your car.

A lightning strike during a thunderstorm can leave a wake of destruction in its path. This can range from minor electrical issues to fire damage. Lightning is also a major cause of injury or death from weather-related dangers.  Most people survive being hit by lightning, but they often have long-term problems.

OSHA Guidelines for Fire Extinguisher Usage in Aston

9/27/2019 (Permalink)

“OSHA” Occupational Safety and Health Administration written and clipped onto a clipboard. Be properly trained on when and how to use a fire extinguisher in Aston.

SERVPRO® of Southern Delaware County knows that owning a fire extinguisher is not enough. Knowing the proper use of fire extinguishers can prevent fire from destroying lives in Aston.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requires that employers train their employees how and when to use fire extinguishers. OSHA does not allow untrained employees to use a fire extinguisher.  They should provide training shortly after the employee is hired, and then every year thereafter. OSHA also requires monthly inspections for fire extinguishers.

Fire extinguishers have to be placed where they cannot be moved or damaged. The carrying handle should be 3.5' to 5' above the floor.

Employees must know when to use fire extinguishers.

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County suggests asking yourself these questions regarding fire extinguishers in your Aston business:

  • Have I pulled the fire alarm?
  • Can everyone get out?
  • Is the fire extinguisher easy to reach?
  • Do I know how to use it?
  • Is the fire contained in a small area?
  • Is the smoke non-toxic?
  • Do I have an escape route?

If you can answer “yes” to all of the questions, it is reasonable to use the fire extinguisher.

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County reminds you that fire is fast. If you cannot contain it within 30 seconds, get everyone out of the area. Call 911 once you are outside.

Commercial Flood Insurance in Chester

9/27/2019 (Permalink)

Picture of a stick person stranded on the top of a building during a flood. Tips to obtaining flood insurance for your Chester business.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides flood insurance. The NFIP doesn’t sell insurance. Buy flood insurance from an insurance agent.

SERVPRO® of Southern Delaware County is interested in helping the businesses in our community become more educated on flood insurance. According to FEMA, 40% of small businesses do not reopen after experiencing a devastating flood.

Check to see if you might be required to have flood insurance. Things to know in Chester:

  • Standard commercial insurance doesn’t pay for flood damage
  • The NFIP sets the rates
  • Rates depend on:
    • whether you live in a flood plain
    • flood risk in your area
    • building’s age
    • building’s construction
  • Building property insurance covers the building
  • Personal property insurance covers the building’s contents
  • NFIP suggests you need both types
  • Policies go into effect 30 days after purchase

SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County recommends the following:

  • Check whether or not your area participates in the NFIP
  • Check whether or not your area is part of the Community Rating The NFIP might have a discount
  • Talk to your insurance agent when you need to make changes

Make sure your business is protected from the devastation that comes with unwanted flooding in your office.

Commercial Water Damage in Aston Building

8/9/2019 (Permalink)

There are numerous situations where a commercial property might suffer extensive water damage. For example, a flood from a storm or overflowing river bank might deposit massive amounts of dirty water all over the first floor of a structure. Or, a burst/leaky pipe might cause water to collect in the spaces between the walls or floors in the structure, leading to mold growth and other issues in these hidden areas.

Whether it’s flood water damage or some other form of moisture intrusion, what should you do when the commercial property you’re inspecting has water damage?

One of the first things you’ll want to do when you discover signs of water damage is verify the extent of the damage. However, a simple visual check probably won’t be enough to reliably establish the full scope of the problem.

Water can soak into many building materials far from the source of the moisture intrusion without creating obvious signs of damage for a long time.

Let the professionals at SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County take care of your commercial water damage.  We are available 24/7/365 and have the specialized equipment and experience that is needed to get your business back up and running as quickly as possbile.

This saves time so we can begin the work of mitigating the damage which can save you time and money. Provides facility details such as shut-off valve locations, priority areas and priority contact information. The Different Causes of Commercial Water Damage

9/17/2018 (Permalink)

When business owners visualize water damage, they often picture a massive storm wiping out power lines, flooding offices, and shutting down businesses for days at a time. It is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms.

However, many entrepreneurs and business space renters forget that storms and severe weather aren't the only causes of floods and water damage. Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

1. Malfunctioning sprinkler systems
Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.

2. Damaged appliances and equipment
This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

3. Broken pipes and plumbing
Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails, water damage could be the result.

4. Backed up sewer lines
This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

Storm damage

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

A major office complex called SERVPRO during a very bad wind storm.  Their first floor was flooding from ground water and to make matters worse they lost their power.  The maintenance manager called us immediately.  Our crew got the necessary equipment together and was on their way.  We were also advised that some of the equipment in the production shop was soaked.  When they arrived there was still standing water but the water had begun to recede.  The company got their emergency generator started and all was good to proceed with the work.  It seemed that aside from the outside water source a pipe had broken in the basement causing most of the damage.  After the water valve was turned off the manager called a plumber to fix the pipe.  Our crew did the cleanup in a timely manner with all the required equipment.  The owner was so very happy that he only had to close shop for one day since SERVPRO did such an amazing job.  Each day a company is closed money is lost.  This owner was so very happy for himself and also for his employees that didn't lose any work time.

Water Damage

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

One of my valued COI's called regarding water damage in one of the first floor offices.  It seems that the water heater stationed in the rear of the building leaked so bad that it had to be replaced by their plumber.  In the meantime water had soaked all their carpeting and some of the desks on that floor.  It was about 1000 sq.ft of water soaked carpeting.  Our crew got out in a timely manner and began extraction.  The air movers and dehumidifiers were all brought it to do their job.  Some of the carpeting had to be removed and replaced but the majority of the carpeting was saved.  My customer was so very happy with the efficient way SERVPRO handled this job.  He advised he will recommend us to all his friends that are business owners.

The Importance of the Emergency Ready Program

7/12/2017 (Permalink)
